Great but buy the 8oz instead
These bottles are great -- we've used nothing else since we brought our baby home from the hospital. However, in hindsight, the 4oz bottles are useless. In no time our daughter was drinking more than 4oz. Save your money on the 4oz bottles and just buy more 8oz bottles -- they'll last longer! But the Dr. Brown's do seem to work. Our baby has never had a problem with colic, reflux, etc.
Great bottle - no need to buy the 8oz size
We tried every bottle out there - and I mean EVERY bottle that we could find in any major retailer here in Canada. We fed exclusively breast milk for the first three months, entirely by bottle, as our baby wouldn't nurse directly. This bottle was the *only one* that didn't make the milk bubble up when feeding her, thereby putting more gas into her little tummy. (This happens much worse in formula than in breast milk, but it was still a problem.)
Yes, it takes an extra 15 seconds to clean, but what is that in the face of 3 hours of crying from gas? Any of the others that claim to reduce gas by allowing air to enter the bottle through another opening (like Avent does: through the ring that holds the nipple on - talk about useless) all force air to bubble up through the milk, which stays there until the baby drinks the bubbles along with the milk.
Don't bother to buy the 8 oz bottles, as they are just too large for most babies. According to our doctors and lactation consultants, most babies drink about 800-1000ml per 24 hours, divided into 6 or 8 feedings. Our little 4 month old girl drinks about 100ml of formula or breast milk per feeding, which is about 3.5 ounces. The larger feedings associated with big bottles have been linked to childhood obesity in more than one study, so pushing them to eat more is not a good idea. (There's a reason that the breast holds the amount that it does.)
The smaller bottles are easier to wash with a bottle brush, and the 8oz bottles are too deep for most bottle brushes - what a pain. It even comes with a little brush that fits the little air holes.
I can't see any downside to these bottles, or things to warn you about. Just a great product. Wish I'd known about their breast pump earlier - it looks more comfortable than the Medela I used.
